I copied your idea...this puzzle is unbelievably easy to solve. I just use my 5x5 center method to solve U and D, and then 4 algorithms to do the rest.

On a real 3x3x2, my PB is about 35seconds. On a 3x3x3 surrogate, it is about 45 seconds.
