My favorite mobile OS will probably stay Windows Mobile (not Windows Phone). It was efficient and ran fast even on low end devices. It had some major downsides that killed it with the general public. Lack of a good UI, lack of a dedicated apps store, and lack of a webkit browser (so browsing was slow). All the tools were there though, especially for a network administrator. In fact Microsoft still suggests WinMo as a professional OS, while Windows Phone is really aimed at teenagers.

Android is decent it just doesn't work well on an ARMv6 device. Even with a JIT compiler, ARMv6 devices lag just running the OS. Sprint also has a lack of ARMv7 Android devices. They only have three as of right now, HTC EVO 4G, Samsung Epic 4G, and HTC EVO Shift 4G. All of which are 4G phones which include a $10 data premium and none of them work on my third party plan. So I just ordered the Pre and I really don't think I will regret it. It's got plenty of power, if not a bit ram starved.

WebOS is essentially a GUI for Linux, while Android is all run through a virtual machine. Which means WebOS should ALWAYS be faster per clock than Android. People have been known to run ARM ports of Linux programs directly on Palm Pre. With a decent redesign to take advantage of a HVGA screen you have access to tons of desktop programs. I've even seen someone run OpenOffice on their Pre, though it was slow and way too big for the screen. I've owned two Android phones, the Hero and the Moment.

Palm Pre should be getting WebOS 2.0 soon, which means full Flash 10.1. That should tilt the playing field back into the Pre's favor. Plus the Pre just has better hardware, ARMv7 is MUCH faster than ARMv6. The Pre also overclocks like a champ, some people even get it stable at 1.2 GHz. There is no phone running that fast at stock I believe. Palm Pre is what you make it really. WebOS is just as open (or possibly more so) than Android, since apps can be written more easily.

@AzNboy346 You replied to my 4 month old comment first dumb fuck. But then again your a pussy who is defending a 2 year old phone when it is crap compared to the phones on the market right now.
palm pre wins hands down....Looks better, better for text messaging, faster and dosent lag. web browsing is smooth and not glitchy like the HTC. HTC looks like its more customizable but im more concerned about how smooth the phone works. PALM PRE WINS FOR ME!

I think both phones are really great. It is only a question of personal demands.
I am waiting for the PRE. It suits me more than the Hero because I have a hardware keyboard.
But BOTH are absolutely competitive to the iPhone especially on price/costs. The Hero is available for about 450 Euros in Germany. The PRE will be available for 480 Euos. That is much more cheaper than the iPhone 3Gs.
I hope that both phones will be successfull.
