Dougie - The Mutilations Continue

An RSPCA investigation is under way after a greyhound was found mutilated in a "sickening act of cruelty".

The animal was found on a grass verge in Bedlington, Northumberland. His ears had been cut off and electrical tape was stuck to his back and legs.

He was taken to a veterinary surgery in Morpeth for treatment and is making a good recovery.

It is thought his ears were deliberately severed to get rid of identification tattoos.

'Unimaginable pain'

The RSPCA is urging anyone who knows who the dog once belonged to, or who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to get in touch as soon as possible.

Inspector Ian Smith said: "This is a horrific and sickening act of cruelty.

"It is clear this dog's ears have been removed by a sharp implement, which must have caused him unimaginable pain and distress.

"Thankfully he was rescued early and taken to safety, else he easily could have died.

"We just hope someone will now come forward with vital information to help us discover what happened."

Dougie is the third greyhound this year - that we know of - to have their ears hacked off and he was only to survive the attack.

Society - not just animal lovers - wont tolerate this level of abuse and cruelty and any criticism made is not a personal attack on you - its on an industry that fails to promote or enforce any level of welfare.

Its not just one greyhound in a million - its the thousands.

I know brood bitches are DNA tested before their first litter. .Could not a system of DNA recording of each pup born coupled with the paper trail of sale info provide a way of tracking the offending owner/s and a gaol term follow? Owners would be very careful with regards to their dogs whereabouts if they thought they could get gaol time.and a life long ban from the industry.

20mrcaser makes the most ridiculous point I've seen in a long while. The greyhound racing industry needs to be abolished. Thank you for posting this hopeful story with a happy ending. Unfortunately thousands of these dogs do not have happy endings, thanks to the gambling habits of some very stupid people.

If the greyhound racing industry abolished the use of ear tattooing it would put end to people committing these barbaric acts . If they need to identify greyhounds why not use micro - chips !

am horrified at this story firstly.but as a owner of several racing greyhounds and 4 retired racing greyhound will ppl not tar everyone with same brush.i no my local track has had a huge reward for the capture of these low lives.they will get there punishment one day but i can safly say having raced dogs for 11 years since i was 10 there are more peados and terrorists in our country than cruel greyhound owners .i would challange anyone to look after my dogs any better than me

people who abuse animals have serious deep-seeted psychological problems that may not be cureable. it is likely that animal abusers may be the same thing that charles manson is, and that is what is called antisocial personality disorder and cannot be cured. we can only keep them separated from the rest of the environment for the safety of all.

I do not talk utter rubbish, I just happen to love Greyhounds, I have four and even though I know the dogs enjoy the races,they do not enjoy the injuries,the awful treatment some (not all)get, I have rescued greys that are nervous wrecks,that flinch everytime you goto stroke them or scream when their ears are touched,because they are roughly treated when racing
