MISSION- A gun fight between Mexican drug cartels and U.S. law enforcement along the Rio Grande River has injured three suspected drug runners. As a result, a bi-national multi-agency investigation is now underway.

It happened Thursday morning in the area of Chimeny Park in south Mission along the river. Officials with the Department of Public Safety say it started when law enforcement officials were participating in a mulit-agency Texas Ranger Recon operation Thursday, when they spotted a suspicious vehicle on the U.S. side of the river along with two drug cartel recovery boats.

Officials said that these three patrol boats, which happened to belong to the Texas Game Warden, tried to intercept the cartel boats but as they approached them the agents came under heavy gunfire from the Mexican side of the border.

Three suspected drug runners were injured during the gunfight and no word if any U.S. law enforcement officers were hurt during the battle. Also no word if any drugs were seized. DPS said authorities in Mexico were notified about the abandonded cartel boats and were on the scene of the shootout.
