can anyone help me with this, my fuel gauge always drops to E after I turn the key or start the engine and stays there, sometimes it starts at full and drops too. but mainly like this just under 1/4, it dosn't matter how much fuel i have always the same. I dropped the tank and pulled the fuel pump out and tried a new pump and sending unit? does the same yet. 1998 Dodge Caravan all of my other gauges are fine and no check engine lights are on.

  • i have had that happen too, i just hit the top, but its really easy to take it apart, need a tutorial

  • You have cold solder connections on the terminals that the connector plugs onto on the back of the dash cluster. easy fix. remove cluster unplug connector and solder connections or have someone solder them for you

  • @fcbclan just got done re sodering all of the connections, still does it, thanks anyways, def worth a try.

  • I currently have the same problem, I replaced the sending unit......what turned out to be the final problem with yours....

  • still has the prob. idk tried a whole new fuel pump with sending unit too. good thing they took it back!

  • it could be the gauge is failing or has failed. my dad had a 1990 chrysler new yorker and the gauges would stop every once in a while and then if u hit the dash a bit they would work and then eventually the gas gauge end up not staying in one spot when u would drive the gas gauge would wobble a bit unless the gauge was on full. i do think its a failing gauge myself it may be time to have it replaced

  • wouldn't the low fuel light come from the bcm? because the light goes on first the the needle drops? i might try a new gauge to rule that out. thanks

  • Replace the sending unit in the fuel tank.

  • I had a similar problem with the gauges on my 1998 Dodge Caravan. Tried every remedy listed below. Finally changed the cluster panel. Been a year and no reoccurring problems.

  • The real problem is in the ignition mine did the same thing until ignition is changed it will keep doing this. I gaurantee it.

  • LOL the same exact thing just happened to me yesterday. Mine has the problem where all the gauges stop working (temp, speedometer, fuel, odometer, etc.), and smacking the top of the dash does the trick, although sometimes you really have to wail on it. I wailed on it a little too hard, and now the needle is just laying in there. :( I was just searching around the 'net, looking for guides on what all kinds of hell you have to go through to get in there, and came across this video..

  • i have the exact van as you... check the relay and the power terminal on the relay box under the hood....

  • Check if you connect the wires underneath the car correct of if you up the floater correct inside the fuel tank. because it seems that the signal is not sent correct.
