During the second half of the last century, Christians in Albania, both Catholics and Orthodox, have worked hard to keep the faith alive despite the cruel persecution of the atheist regime. Benedict XVI noted this as he received His Beatitude Anastas, Orthodox Archbishop of Tirana and All Albania in audience. The Pope stressed the great missionary fervor of the archbishop and the wide Catholic-Orthodox convergence on the most important theological challenges. Although there is not yet full communion between the two churches, there is nevertheless a vast area of understanding and common work they share.
