A Chinese folk legend may have given rise to the idea that you can only balance a raw egg on its end during the vernal or autumnal equinox. Actually you can balance one on any day of the year. Here's how.

  • Balancing it on a flat surface is the whole point. Putting it on a cushy surface would be like placing it back in the carton and saying, "see it's upright." All you need to do is find eggs that have bumps on theirs ends and stand them up on those. IT has nothing to do with the length of day (equinoxes)
