Spencer dryden to me, was the sound of the Airplane, Grace Slicks crazy vocals first then Spencer Drydens brilliant drumming, followed by Jorma and Jack
As good as it gets. Dick Cavettt had other shows which were pretty cool, too. I wish that last song hadn't been truncated, as that is a fantastic jam, kinda a Plastic Fantastic Lover instrumental.
Spencer was quick, fluid and imaginative. Great, great drummer who later went on to drive the New Riders Of The Purple Sage. Shout-out to Nicky Hopkins on piano. Great line-up here. Easily their best.
I am the young man dancing with Joni during end credits (@ 9:14 in). I will publish full story which is even better... i have never seen this footage before last week i only lived it since there were no vhs or dvds then. check out the whole story including my seeing Joni in 1995 and the magic of that meeting too..She and i must be kindred spirits...
THANK YOU WHO EVER FOR POSTING WHERE DID U FIND THE FOOTAGE AND WHAT WAS THE FORMAT 2" TAPE?
When the Airplane and Joni Mitchell and David Crosby and Stephen Stills sat around talking, all I heard was David Crosby blabbing non-stop. Who shoved all the coke up his nose, besides himself? They couldn't even keep him off stage while Airplane did "Somebody to Love". Rock Star Ego Runs Rampant on Cavett Show. Details at 11:00.
@powergirl901 their original drummer was Jerry Peloquin(until 65), this is Spencer Dryden who played the drumms after Skip Spence(65-66) from late 66 to early 70. You can hear him playing from Surrealistic Pillow until Volunteers. I think he was their best drummer, but it's often hard to hear him playing during the "sound mess" that Jefferson Airplane sometimes created. If you concentrate on his drumming you'll hear what I mean, he was really a very talented drummer. He died 2005 so RIP Spencer
Spence Dryden was a JAZZ drummer, first. THAT is what made him good. He wasn't a 'pounder' and he knew what do. He added finese.
