@Mankind081 It bombed because Carpenter failed to judge the publics mood and what they wanted. Spielberg got it right with ET, it was the perfect movie at the right time. John has since expressed a similar view. Had The Thing's release date been put back it wouldn't have attracted so much venom from the critics (and public at large), but Universal insisted they wanted the movie released in September which frustrated the hell out of John he sensed they'd got the timing wrong and he was right.

@Mankind081 Why don't you consider a 'straight' horror movie? I don't understand.

@theScytheofGod I think part of the reason why it failed was because the title of the movie fooled a lot of people into thinking it was a straight horror film when it wasn't.

So sad...The Thing, one of the best movies I've ever seen, but because it didn't have an upbeat "hollywood" ending, and was very nihilistic, americans didn't appreciate it when it came out. Me? I must've seen it 50 times. Love it.
