I use offset cuts when downing city trees. when you are in a tree you can make an offset cut in a standing log so you dont need to be cutting when it falls ...someone can either just tug the load line or the crane can then snap it while you are away from the log.

I have never used an offset cut on the ground. he is just worried about getting pinched or something? once you have cut for a bit you can just tell how the tree/log wants to move and you cut accordingly, under over whatever. if you watch your cut on larger logs you can see it opening or closing, then adjust.

nobody cuts a face in the tree to buck it. you cut as far down above before pinching and than come up from below meeting that cut. you'll ruin the scale end of a log if you use these way to slow methods.

Great videos Tim. It's all coming back to me now. Haven't cut down trees since I was a kid with my dad. Bought a wood stove this year and have 20 acres of forest to work on for next seasons firewood. Thanks. I have all the confidence I need to start falling trees. Now I just need to find the time.
