We can see a jockey practice in the jockey's room at Hollywood park. He shows us how to use the whip and switch hands. Then we see a down the stretch run on a real horse.

@hannahalexismommy Most whips these days are so padded that the horse doesn't feel it.

If you watch the races,most of the jockeys wave the whip to the front/side of the horse (so they can see it) and continue down its body to its bum to give the impression to the horse that its going to get whacked. the sound scares them more then the feeling of it. Most riders will opt not to hit horses (they hit their riding boot instead)and racing rules restrict them from unnecessary whipping to the post:)

Sometimes horses need to be shown who's boss, and a love pat isn't going to do it. A good, hard smack on the ass is sometimes what it calls for. And you never know, maybe the room was making it echo or the material on the mechanical horse was doing it.
