This garden exemplifies Permaculture in an urban setting. 1/2 acre with established fruit trees, berry bushes, veggie gardens, perennial and herbs, composting system, and many establishing gardens. Harvest and food storage and preservation are also in this part 2. It's lo-fi, but I hope that you like it. check us out: http://gorgeousandedible.com

  • MrTadblack.. thanks for your comments.. It's so cold here that apparently (what I've heard) is that the only way to overwinter carrots is to dig them out and then transplant them again the following year (storing them in a root cellar or whatever over the winter). Do you live in a cold climate? Our parsley overwintered last year, and flowered this year (2010), but didn't quite make it to seed. All of that family is pretty good for attracting beneficials..

  • what percent approx. do you continue to grow in the winter? i live in ontario and i'm kind of struggling to find permaculture information for winter stages.

  • @scumcrust Hi there,

We sprout in the winter but mainly eat whatever we have stored.. lots of frozen stuff is in the freezer out in the garage (unplugged). We also can and preserve a lot. We have a root cellar under the house for root crops too. Although we have a great sunroom and this winter we will keep trying to grow greens in there..

  • Hi John,

I think the shed is about 10x 6 ft. Not sure I haven't measured it, but around that sort of size.. Good luck building yours..

  • Your shed looks awsome!!! I wish mine was like that! Awsome Jerusalem artichoke I want some soo bad ;) you garden looks awsome!

  • Hi there, I don't know if I'll have any more Jerusalem artichoke again.. I haven't been able to save it from rotting in the root cellar.. thanks for your comments..

  • our bylaw says that we have to have a bin to put our compost in and it has to be coverd at all times. this video is a few years old what are you doing with your garden now?

  • @bigdog55 I saw your comment then saw two flagged as spam when I checked them out I found that they were simply repeats of your lovely comment and definitely spam free (I've seen this sort of thing before)

...I wondered if you realized that you can remove your own comment by clicking the down arrow to the right of the reply spot ...it only takes a second or two ... just a thought

  • Also I have to say the place looks great. Thanks for such a lovely video.

  • Thank you for doing the right thing and having fun :)

  • This garden is AMAZING!

I was just wondering, how do you plant your mint? Do you let it grow wild or do you pot it first?

I live in Ottawa, and I was just wondering if you knew what nut trees are native and hardy enough to withstand our winters? I'm also interested in getting a cherry tree, but i was told to plant them in pairs for them to pollinate? Could you clarify for me?

    Thanks so much!
