This workshop focused on problem solving. The RDO modelled and exemplified effective ways for teaching and learning problem solving such as the use of:
Effective questioning
Cooperative small group work
Rich collaborative tasks all, of which promote discussion in the classroom. Teachers engaged in solving problems and presented to each other how and the thinking behind how they solved the problem.

At this workshop teachers were introduced to mini-white boards. The PMDT have found them to be an indispensable resource at workshops for questioning but also for assessing learning at a glance.

Teachers reflected on their current practices and considered whether their strategies in the classroom were balanced between procedural and problem solving. Another reflective exercise undertaken was to describe how their students were learning in the classroom and consider whether their students were being active participants or individuals watching listening and imitating procedures. Workshop 3 also focused on a Junior Cycle Teaching and Learning Plan: Introduction to Fractions and a Leaving Certificate Teaching and Learning Plan: Complex Numbers. Teachers were introduced to various class activities that promote innovative ways of teaching fractions (using uni-fix cubes) and complex numbers (using animated characters in films) that promote higher order thinking, encourage classroom interaction and make learning more meaningful for students.

Workshops cannot attempt to offer a complete course, rather the workshops exemplify effective and enjoyable ways of teaching and learning with understanding.

This workshop is one of a series of 10 being offered to all teachers of mathematics. All resources used at workshops are available on the Project Maths website: www.projectmaths.ie
