This demonstration features one of my Pressure Sensitive CV Ribbon Controllers, dubbed the "Walking Stick". These controllers add a new dimension to my standard 20" single-CV ribbon design, by offering a secondary CV output that can be varied by applying different amounts of pressure to the ribbon's surface.

For the purposes of this demo, I used a few Synthesizers.com modules to build up a very basic patch that leverages the pressure sensitivity feature. The ribbon's CV is being routed to control the pitch of the two VCOs, and the controller's pressure CV output is routed to control the state-variable filter's cutoff frequency, and also to the control input of a single VCA. Oscillator #2 is running thru this VCA, back into the frequency modulation input of oscillator #1.

When pressure is applied to the ribbon's surface, the VCA opens up and increases the amount of frequency modulation going on between the oscillators. In absence of a final VCA in this patch, I'm also using the ribbon's pressure sensitivity to "open-and-close" the cutoff frequency of the filter. With no pressure applied, the filter allows no sound to pass. Apply varying amounts of pressure to the ribbon essentially "envelopes" the filter - letting you shape the attack and decay through the nuances of your playing. Natural string-like bends and vibrato effects can also be achieved using this feature.

  • Thanks, wickedcoolsafenice!

  • very very cool

  • Thank you, John!

  • Nice stuff!

  • Thanks for your comment!

It has been illuminating experimenting with just a few modules at a time. Being admittedly a bit over-obsessed with gear, its nice to take a step back and realize that you really don't need much to elicit some wonderfully complex sounds. I think that a minimalist, portable modular would be loads of fun!

    Cheers,

    Joe

  • I love modular synths; it's great to hear someone being so creative with just a handful of modules and a ribbon controller. I've been considering a similar minimalist ribbon controlled system myself - would love it to be portable and battery operated though. Nice controller 12TONE, and great music too!
