A Compilation of some of my latest Scopecam kills. Most of the birds taken in this video are Red-Eyed Turtle Doves, and one of them is a Laughing Dove.

You want to know why I shoot these Birds?
An Extract from a study done on Red-Eyed turtle dove and Laughing dove as an agricultural pest by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln:

"In South Africa, the laughing dove (Streptopelia senegaleusis) and the turtle dove (Streptopelia capicola) have been identified as major pests on sorghum which is the main cereal food item for the population, and loss to the doves has assumed a lot of importance.

Questionnaires were sent out to farmers. Preliminary results compiled from answers to the questionnaires indicated that a large variety of crops including rice (Oryza
sativa); maize (Zea mays); cowpea (Vigna unguiculata); groundnut (Arachis hypogea); sorghum (Sorghum guineense) and soyabean (Glycine max) were attacked at various stages of growth, planting, seedling, and harvesting by the red-eyed turtle dove (Table 1).
The planted grains were dug up immediately after planting and swallowed whole. During the seedling stage of growth, the cotyledons were pecked and the germinating seed dug up and consumed. The extent of damage depends on the population of doves in the crop land. Damage was severe in many instances; sometimes it was total.

The most common form of control is human scaring which is fast becoming obsolete because scarers are no longer available and they are very expensive to maintain.
Maize and rice grains soaked in concentrated insecticides have been used to kill birds but this habit is dangerous and is being discouraged."

By shooting these birds, I am not only providing myself with a tasty snack, I am also contributing towards solving the problem that these birds impose. Rather than letting pesticides kill them slowly and painfully, putting a pellet through a bird can kill it instantly and painlessly

  • @astonblimp1 Hi, I live in South Africa, along the coast:) and my scope camera is nothing more than a normal video camera attached to the eyepiece of my scope with a home-made scope mount...made of toilet rolls and packaging tape!:P

  • So your first video of this one got removed (I suspect from the tree hugging bird lovers flagging it), can you tell us why you shoot these doves? You said to go to the first one to find out. Also, do you eat these?

  • @sniper152 Yes, unfortunately...Some people just suck:/ Yes, there is a very good reason i shoot these, and I will post this in the video description of this video as it is rather long:)
