Awesome groove here propelled, driven and bounced nicely by Oscar Pettiford's bass. Shades of Ellington/Blanton with the full band, for sure.

Shows how boisterous Duke's outfit could be - and how Sonny Greer could bridge with a solo while making those skins sing. :)

  • This piece was recorded 3 times, in 1946 and 1947, and I'm not sure which one this is. Althought you show Ben Webster in the slide show, he was out of the band at the time. The tenor soloist is Al Sears on all 3 recordings.

  • @davidpalmquist Yeah, I fudged big time on Ben Webster here, who'd been out of Duke's outfit for 3 years by this time.

  • This is really chamber music mate! Oscar has such an astonishing technique that of course he can do whatever. In addition hi language make his lines as a bird flying over the melody, harmony and everything. Beatiful!

  • Very Nice!

  • Sears name came up on my regular Google Alerts today, too. Small web, eh?

He's in an article on (remove spaces)

  • I just read an article on Al Sears in the Duke Ellington Society of Sweden's newsletter. He was known as Big Al, and his tone was big like Websters. It's a forgiveable fudge.

I appreciate the uploads you do. Particularly the Ellingtons.

  • Great!
