Recovering stand of Tecate Cypress (Cupressus forbesii) trees in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area. The opened cones you see in these photos remained closed for many years, only opening after the parent tree was killed in a wildfire, thereby allowing the seeds to colonise the bare ground exposed by the fire. This species is now classified as it's own species - just Cupressus forbesii. It is not a variety of guadalupensis - a completely morphologically distinct species which occurs only on Guadalupe Island, 150 miles off the coast of Baja, Meixco.
