because it wasnt the captain sailing it the captain was asleep in bed when they hit the iceburg, and they were traveling too fast to put in reverse. but if they hit iceburg head on they would have survived because of the re-enforced steel plate

why couldn't the captain a supposedly first class captain put the ship in reverse and sail to the ship that was just 10 miles away saving everyone on board.
A ship with a hole where the Titanic had one at the front wont take on water in reverse.
