I decided to stop by Saylorville Lake and check out the spillway. Because of the record snowfall we received this winter, the Army Corps of Engineers increased the amount of water flowing out of the dam to try to prevent the lake from topping the emergency spillway. Its kind of cool to watch.

  • I wouldn't go within 50 feet of this thing!

Every video of the Saylorville spillway has raging water like this. Does it always flood in Des Moines or something?

  • @fightfairfightfair Not always. This year was bad. We had a wet winter, followed by a really wet summer. The video above was taken back in March before the flooding really got bad. During the first week of July, you couldn't get anywhere near the dam.

  • ....'that' is a perfect example for the incompressibility of water... loss of buoyancy due to the surface tension of water- which forms bubbles- that cannot support or displace the weight of a boat or body...
