Sit back and enjoy some spectacular birds in 720p HD full screen! These images were shot over the past few weeks of October, 2009, as the summer species start to head south and the new resident immature male Anna's Hummingbirds begin to stake-out their territories.

Birds featured here: Male Anna's 0:13 , 0:56 (red head), male Costa's 0:25 , 0:51 (purple head), female Allen's 0:22 , 0:30 (green/buff with tan/orange pastel sides and red throat patch), and female Anna's 0:44 , 1:13 (mostly green/buff like Allen's females but without the orange sides).

A few shots of an immature male Anna's Hummingbird looks like his face is ragged and worn ( 0:48 , 0:33 )but he's actually just growing in his adult male plumage and will have a spectacular irridescent red head like the other males when the feathers are all grown-in.

All birds shown here were filmed in Santa Clarita, CA using a Canon SX10-is "Robo-Cam", running a motion detection script in CHDK (a firmware hack for many Canon cameras).

The music is "Oberion" from the "Silicon Landscape" CD by Technician.

Enjoy the show!

  • I'm glad yo liked this one - the hummingbirds are indeed very interesting to watch and film, and their colors are really amazing too :-) CHeers!

  • I'm surprised to hear that anyone would hunt hummingbirds in the US. Natives in some tropical places have hunted them for feathers, but it's unusual elsewhere. In suburban/rural areas It's normal for populations to fluctuate from year to year. Storms may have killed-off some of the migrating populations in their Mexican wintering grounds, and if nectar sources are more scarce or the local habitat has been disrupted, the birds may have temporarily relocated nearby as well.

  • Thanks so much for watching :-)

  • too cute

  • 1 person is a cat lover. I for one love birds. Birds like this, are getting hunted. These birds are beautiful creatures. 5 years ago my backyard was full of hummingbirds. The next year, a couple less. The next year, less than half were gone. The next year was less. Last year I only saw 7. This year I saw none. It brings tears to my eyes that cold hearted people are hunting beautiful birds like this, for their feathers, or food! Thumbs up if u agree!
