Composed in a couple of hours to meet an academic study deadline, this piece represents a flirtation with a prevailing trend- Minimalism.

Despite anything that may sound to the contrary here, the score throughout the work is a four semiquaver pattern in the right hand against a two quaver pattern in the left. Anything else is purely a result of that most basic combination.

When I played it to my then composition tutor (John Joubert) he commented that he felt it was more me than "the other stuff you write". I respectfully disagree. This, for me is just playing with figurations and is of no personal interest in ways that the "Trilogy" is. I love it as a piece but I would hate to spend my entire life writing stuff like it to suit my peers.

The Pianist here is the brilliant Philip Martin who is not only a great pianist but a good sport with a great sense of humour.
