Part 1 of 6: More proof of the pioneering career of Steve Dahl; long before many comedy radio people did TV shows Steve Dahl & Garry Meier had already done quite a few (one of which won an Emmy.) This is a hilarious late night TV special called "An Extremely Low Budget Show" that Steve & Garry did in 1984. While 'the boys' were primarily radio guys they did some really excellent stage and TV shows over the years (look for the ground-breaking and Emmy Award winning "Greetings From Graceland" available here on You Tube!) and this particular show is one of my personal favorites. It does feature a portion from one of their concert stage shows, as well as one of Steve's music videos which appeared on MTV (remember when MTV actually played 'music' videos?!) This is the show in its entirety, minus the commercials.

Just more proof of the genuis of Steve Dahl, the chemistry that Steve & Garry had (Garry is a smart and funny guy in his own right) and the great level of comedy and comedic writing/banter that Steve and Garry had (and have, though separately, still.)

Part 1 features the introduction to the show, and the boys judging (and Steve participating in) a Micheal Jackson look-a-like contest in Gary, Indiana.

  • Steve was such a complainer. It worked on radio, but I think because he was so self-conscious about his weight he hated doing tv. He could've been better had he worked it better (Jackie Gleason made it work for him).

  • @scarlettohara66 I don't think Steve was as self-conscious as much as self-effacing, and I do believe that it worked for him (as well as complaining) but in a different way than the example you cite. Steve's 'bit' (for lack of a better term) was more 'real' than others in terms of his honesty about what he really thought. I don't know that you can compare that to scripted comedy but it is what has made Steve a unique, pioneering personality, especially in broadcast radio (and TV when he did TV!)

  • @TheOriginalShockJock I don't look at is as complaining as much as I do his personal comedic filter of what he perceives, if that means bitching about something than so be it, but it's always funny!

  • That was great. If I remember right, weren't these shows on chanell 60 or 66? I don't remember seeing them but I knew of them. Usually I forgot that they were on.

  • I think it was 66 but I'm not exactly sure. Someone was nice enough to send me a copy of this as I didn't get to see it when it was new either, now it's one of my favorites, classic Steve & Garry comedy.

Thanks for the comment, more to come, and let me know if you or anyone you know has anything to share! Later.
