Benny Wenda's Story

Benny Wenda is from West Papua. His village was bombed by Indonesia when he was a child and many of his family were killed. Over 100.000 people have been killed by the Indonesian military. Later, he began to campaign peacefully to free his people. For this 'crime' he was arrested, tortured and threatened with death.

All they are asking for is the freedoms that you enjoy every day - the freedom to speak your mind, to live without fear and to choose your own government.

Just because the western colonialist did wrong, that doesn't give the Indonesian government the right to do wrong!

And yes, the Indonesian government is behaving itself like a greedy, killing, brutal colonial power, and that's not acceptable by any standard, not even by the Indonesian standard.

And this is not a Westerner speaking, this is a citizen of Indonesia crying for help!!

And by the way, Northern Ireland DID have a FAIR referendum, and they decided to separate from Ireland and join the UK, and Ireland accepted that. Take that as an example for a democratic choice.

Fair ? yea right :) if you're seeing this from the biased perspective of western media, you're right :p. Do your homework and look @ the the troubles and why such grp exist even after the 1973 referendum. The point is, westerners shld look @ their own backyard b4 start 'preaching' abt democracy & freespeech. The only diff between the 3rd world ctry and 'so called' developed countries like is the 3rd world ctry don't have big media to back them up & twisting the world's opinion.

The difference is that in Northern Ireland the Army is not killing 1000s of people every year! And in Northern Ireland ALL groups have committed themselves to a peaceful and democratic process.

This backyard is sorted! Of course there are other unresolved conflicts, but killing people to solve them is not an option.

And I get my opinion from meeting people who have suffered at the hands of the Indonesian army, not the 'media'.

The media is saying way to little about West Papua - because Indonesia is not letting them in. Let me tell you, I haven't found one recent report about west papua in mainstream western media.
