There's more to eating than just its effect upon our health. Pleasure, a sense of community, our sense of connection with nature, these are all highly important aspects of eating that may get overlooked. In this segment with Deborah Kane of Ecotrust, Michael Pollan connects the dots, between our over-reliance upon science, in this case, the science of nutrition, and our gross under-appreciation of culture as the trustworthy guide to our approach to eating food.

  • After reading 'The Omnivores Dilemma', I really want to experience a Polyface Farm like he did!

  • Maybe you can one day...intern at one and/or start your own! I visited one last week and it was awesome. I'll be posting that story in several weeks.

  • this logic is so sharp and naked you feel refreshed.

  • Not everyone knows high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, and not everyone reads labels to see what's in the processed "food" from the stores. If people did that, we won't see all the store-carts staying on line at the check registers full with junk in them. So, YES, we need "gurus" like Michael and others, who took their time to learn, to educate people about what exactly is in all those boxes bought and paid as being food.

  • people are also eating because the food is drugged and it puts you into a trance and makes you eat more and eat more frequently...food a drug now

  • the sacred ness of food and prayer of thanks before eating also nearly vanished now a days!

  • Huh..... Nutrtion seems to have a lot in common with Psychology. We can't yet figure out what makes the brain works the way it does... it's just too complex. Looks like the carrot is the same way. ;]

Perhaps Nutritionalism is is the new Phrenology. That was all the rage in it's day as well, now we look back and say, "logical enough for the times since they weren't well educated, but man were they off."

  • I think he underestimates how far back in time this "Culture" he thinks has answers for a humanistic food, was interrupted. Because really most cultures besides maybe the ones that live in the jungles are not that healthy. And even those small groups, i think are lost from what was a greater civilization of humanity that was dispelled from their habitats and from their cycles, and took on terrain and technologies of preservation that were not healthy. But this stuff is easier to sell!!!!

  • Forget some millions upon millions of youtube views for Justin Beiber!...People need to watch THIS!

  • I'm gonna read his book.

  • Julia Child said that same thing. It's better flavor and it doesn't break down or change at high frying temperatures.

  • That's true. I've seen lots of articles that say the mediterranean approach is very healthy.

  • Michael pollan champions the meditarranean diet - he champions all of the traditional cuisines that still retain their cultural wisdom.

He also cautions against labels - one of his rules is, if it has a health claim on it, it's probably not healthy.
