Current music making is garbage. The Previn recording which likely many contributors know was founded in silence out of which issued passion; this stupid drivel issues out of IDEAS of how to play Messiaen.

1:39 did he punch the keys?

Yes. I suppose he wants to hit that diatonic cluster with a bit more power. Messiaen doesn't specify to do that in the score.

I believe that was a "Chromatic Cluster" or Tone Cluster" as its usually called, and depending on the size one common was to execute this is with the fist

No, it is not a chromatic cluster , but rather a whole tone cluster. It is written as E, F#, G# in both hands. My guess is that he plays E, F#, G#, E and the F#, G# at the top with his right fist. It happens too quickly to be absolutely sure.

@jre58591 , you have the score?
if it is only f#g# he plays with the fist , that is very unusual. .....Absolutely wonderful piece by a Master Composer
