Rescue the Kazekage
Part 4 of 9
The Akatsuki have made a bold move--taking hostage the Kazekage, the strongest ninja of the Sand Village, who up util now was seen as something of a near-invincible monster. Naturally, Tsunade feels as though Kakashi's team isn't up to the task and call on Team Guy to support them. I love the way Might Guy talks. He's basically a highly competent and perceptive Zap Brannigan.
By the way, Kakashi's team, which consists of Naruto and Sakura at the moment, is known as Team 7. Team Guy, for the record, is...Team Guy. It consists of three oddballs, perhaps even more so than Naruto:
Neophytes to Naruto will notice one member looking remarkably like Guy. His name is Rock Lee, and he's Might Guy's #1 fan, going as far to dress up like him and have the same bowl cut and eyebrows. Rock Lee is unique among ninjas in that he is incapable of ninjutsu and genjutsu, which are those super powers you see. (Examples we've already seen include Kakashi's elemental attacks, Gaara's sand powers, and Deidara's explosive clay sculptures.) Instead, Rock Lee focuses on taijutsu, which is ordinary physical strength. He has trained so hard, he's caught up to the rest of the group, without having any ninja tricks of his own, through physical force and agility.
Neji Hyuga is the guy with the white pupils and the long hair. He is part of the prestigious Hyuga clan and was born with the Byakugan Eyes, which is a complement of sorts to the Sharingan Eyes (which you've seen Kakashi have, and later on, Sasuke too). He is a counterpoint to Lee of sorts, that he's done less ninja training than your average ninja, confident that his birthright will win him battles. (For the most part, he can back it up.) His style, in the series, revolves around finding strike points in his opponent's bodies and either injuring them severely or suppressing their chakra (a ninja's source of power) by poking at them, thus winning his battles through the least amount of effort. This is not to say he's lazy--that would be Shikamaru's forte--but he can be pretty cocky at times. His cousin Hinata (you'll see her later) is in love with Naruto.
Tenten (no last name, so far) is the least developed character in Naruto, story-wise. Masashi Kishimoto admits that she's there as filler--as ninja apprentices are assigned in trios, Kishimoto realized the characters he designed was 1 less than a multiple of three, so he designed Tenten to round things out. She loses every battle she participates in and has had no important events with her involved, nor any particular signature moves. This game makes it up: Her attacks are based around that giant scroll of hers, which she uses as a portal. In battle, she makes weapons come out of it, particularly maces and bombs.
Anyway, just as much of the last video was Naruto and his comrades making their to the Sand Village, this video is of Guy's journey. It won't be a repeat though, as Kisame Hoshigaki intervenes, creates Water Clone Jutsu, and takes the entire team on. As you can tell by the red cloud robe Kisame wears, he's in cahoots with Sasori and Deidara and are of comparable levels of strength to them.
Kisame's theme is sharks. You can tell just by looking at him. His sword, the Samehader, called Shark Skin in this game, its translated name, is able to drain chakra out of people it touches and adds it to its own. (This is not reflected in NUNS 2, oddly enough. Also, Samehader is the Pokémon Sharpedo's Japanese name.) Kisame is one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. Prior to the events of this game, Kakashi had already fought Zabuza, another one of them. A third has since shown up in the manga. His name is Chojuro, he is a direct assistant to the Mizukage, and he's always afraid he'll make a mistake. (You won't see Chojuro in this game, as he only appears AFTER the Naruto vs. Pain fight.) Anyway, Kisame has some history with Might Guy. I'm not sure what it is, as I don't think the series has ever brought this back up. Can anyone better versed in Naruto fill me in on it? (EDIT: Apparently, none exists. It's just a joke.)
Meanwhile, the alarmed citizens of the Sand Village are trying to gather up help, and the old lady Chiyo has volunteered to help Kakashi's team track down Sasori and get rid of him. The game does this within a single conversation. In the manga and anime, we see Chiyo is one of the great elders of the Hidden Sand Village and has taken on this undertaking because she deduced Sasori is involved and becomes filled with guilt after her husband dies (of old age, if I remember correctly).
We'll see what becomes of Chiyo's alliance in the next part.
do they really call it "shark skin" instead of samehada in the dub?

@LookItsCollin Yes. That's what "samehada" means.

@Overhazard im aware, it just sounds terrible to say shark skin instead of samehada. Just like we dont call sakura cherry blossom or kakashi scarecrow

@LookItsCollin This is what it sounds like to a Japanese viewer though. To them, "Shark Skin" probably sounds like a cool English name.

@Overhazard yes, they also hear Cherry blossom and Scarecrow instead of Sakura and Kakashi. But we dont call them those names in the american version because it would sound weird.

@LookItsCollin And that's an issue all translators have to deal with: Where do you draw the line between things that are translated and things that aren't? It's never very clear, and it's always up to that individual translator.
In this case, it was likely due to Kisame's sword's name having significance to what it is (it's rough like shark skin, and it scrapes like it too), whereas Sakura has nothing to do with cherry blossoms nor Kakashi having anything to do with scarecrows.
