At the end of the Big Bend Power Station discharge canal sits the Apollo Beach Preserve. On November 23, 2010, Big Bend Power Station team members, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission employees and Lowry Park Zoo Zookeepers returned three manatees to the wild.

One manatee named "TECO II" and another one called Bartlett were released in the morning and the third manatee, dubbed Turner, was released in the afternoon.

The manatees have spent the last year recovering from cold stress at the Lowry Park Zoo manatee hospital and are now healthy enough to be returned to their natural habitat.
