Traditional.
Maurice O'Shea - fiddle
Gavin Ellis McDee - jaws harp
Jack Pedlow - vocals/guitar

Let grasses grow and waters flow
In a free and easy way
But give me enough of the rare old stuff
That's brewed near Galway Bay
And police all from Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim too
We'll give them a slip and take a sip
Of the rare ould mountatin dew.

At the foot of the hill
There's a neat little still
Where the smoke curls up to the sky
By the smoke and the smell you can plainly tell
There's poteen brewing nigh
For it fills the air with an odour rare
That betwixt both you and me
That when home you stroll you can take a bowl
Or a bucket of the mountain dew.

Now learned men who with your pen
Have wrote your praises high
That sweet poteen from Ireland green
Distilled from wheat and rye
Throw away your pills it will cure all ills
Of Pagan, Christian or Jew
Take off your coat and grease your throat
With the rare ould mountain dew.

  • Although I have watched this one a few times already , came back for a refresher. Many of us here in the the hills can trace our ancestry to the Scot-Irish who arrived here several generations ago. Along with there toughness and will to survive, they brought there little stills and the knowledge to convert rye into rocket fuel. While waiting for rockets to be invented, they found and other uses for it, fire starter, internal medication, and of course underwear remover. We thank your ancestors.
