Lyrics & Information

This is one of my favourite tracks by OMD. From their great 'Men From Earth' album.

Lyrics :-

There are people livin' in poverty
Their lives are just misery
Can't get enough relief

There are children needin' some food to eat
Shoes on their little feet
Lookin' to you and me

Why do we look away?
Think it will go away today
I think it's only fair
That we should all be asked to share

There are men among us who rule our lands
And though they're just fools in bands
Hold us all in their hands

There are people preaching their gods to me
Sayin' that I can't see
Yet they give me books to read

They say more's wrong than right
Some say more dark than light
I say it's how you think
That makes ya swim or sink

(Beautiful solo outro and end)

  • I have lost count how many times I've seen these guys live. You should see how many people come to thier concerts and almost always outdoor concerts.

Bikers from all over the states, locals and everyone in between.

  • Never forget buying Men From Earth on glorious vinyl in a bargain bin of my local department store (El Corte Inglés) for a mere 20 pesetas...¡1977!, my 16 candles in a dream-like haze of Country-rock and The Beatles, with The Jam and The Buzzcocks close to invade my brain...This fantastic tune has been since a favorite of mine on par with You Know Like I Know, If I Only Knew, Mr. Powell, Moon Is On The Rise, Spaceship Orion, Jackie Blue, Leatherwood... Long Live OMDaredevils, Viva Larry Lee!!!

  • Man, oh man, how relevant these lyrics are today. From a song written 35 years ago!! "There are people preaching their gods to me"... Larry Lee, you are so very underrated as a songwriter and as a singer, too. "I think it's only fair that we should all be asked to share"...indeed. I would like to think that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have just loved this song. This song is a great example of the power of music. "Why do we look away"....

  • Larry Lee is the best!

  • One of the many great songs by OMD which was a must underrated band.

    Beautiful that close harmony !!!

still one of my favourite bands ..always !!!

  • All I know these men have saved my life more than once and the strength of the music and the down to earth honesty of their words have held me together for over 30 yrs and i pray they have continued success and health . I have been dead 3 times and suicidal 2 times and every time their great music and words of realism have brought me back to be the man I am today

  • love the base at the end

  • This song is as close to perfect as is humanly possible. :) This song never has appeared on any of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils compilation albums -- BUT IT SHOULD HAVE!!! Great lyrics.

  • Thuscydides could not have said it any better than this song!

  • I could not have said it better akibaforyou. They have been with me for the last 40 years and though they do not know me, I love them for what they have given me.
