Ex-Detroit police officer was drunk, high and on-duty when he crashed car on I-96

Former Detroit Police Sgt. Lemuel Wilson is expected to be arraigned today on multiple counts after allegedly driving drunk and high when he crashed his marked scout car into a median on I-96 in July.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a released statement that Wilson has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and use of a controlled substance (marijuana).

Wilson reportedly was trapped in his burning vehicle after the crash, and local residents were credited with rescuing him. The freeway was closed for roughly three hours as firefighters put out the flames and authorities cleared the scene.

Police Chief Ralph Godbee later confirmed suspicions that Wilson, a 17-year veteran of the force who resigned after the incident, was intoxicated and on-duty at the time of the crash.

"I am disheartened that a member of the Detroit Police Department holding a supervisory rank, who has been sworn to protect and serve; and to display the highest level of professionalism, would endanger the lives of others as well as his own," Godbee said in a statement this summer.
