Darth Vader's holographic communication with the Emperor was updated for the DVD release of The Empire Strikes Back with Ian McDiarmid, filmed during production of Episode III.

This is the original version of the scene.

  • Ian McDiarmid is the best Emperor

  • I like Ian's emperor better. Something about his emperor reaches a level of evil that the average actor just wouldn't be able to reach. I think it's the voice. This guy, Clive, sounds like my neighbor, relatively harmless if just a little creeply. He's a little eerie sounding, but not much more than that. I feel like Darth Vadar has more of a presence against this emperor, whereas he is clearly subordinate to Ian's emperor.

  • I hate to say it because the original is usually the best, but Ian does do better than Clive does.

  • This emperor looks like Yoda in a cloak.

  • Clive should have used that Dr Doom voice.

  • @socarulz This scene, and the CGI Yoda in TPM rather than that awful puppet, were the only good changes

  • I didn't like this. In this case, having McDiarmid was a good change.

  • It was cool 20 years ago...not today.

  • @SallyImpossible

Yeah, I loved him in The Mikado

  • Good video, but Ian Mc Diarmid IS the Emperor Palpatine

  • @Reesecups2892 No. Lucas himself stated the Windu was able to destroy Palpatine if Anakin hadn't come between. Its also in the novel. Palpatine is strong, but no match for Windu. And Yoda had to face batallions of Clones AND Palpatine if they would have continued theyr'e battle. Anyway, Palpatine rules.

  • Preferred this Emperor's voice to Ian McDiarmid's.. and i'm not saying this because Clive Revill is a New Zealander.
