A small fire began a little before 3 pm, Tuesday, May 5, 2009 in Building 1 of Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center, and turned into a major fire that destroyed the whole building over the next several hours. Heavy wind and gusts hampered firefighting efforts all afternoon and evening.
[ Added 5/23/09: It was reported at a staff meeting this past week that the investigation is complete, and that the fire was determined to be accidental. ]
Sno-Isle is a couple blocks from the Boeing Company factory where the 747, 767, 777, and 787 planes are manufactured. They reportedly had to close all their doors during the fire to keep smoke from blowing into the assembly hangers. The Boeing building can be seen in a couple of the video shots.
A huge piece of each current student, staff, and administrator from that building went up in smoke that Tuesday afternoon. A smaller piece of every current and past student, staff, and administrator involved with Sno-Isle was also lost. However, no one was hurt in the fire. (One firefighter did sustain minor injuries in a fall while staging equipment for the fire.)
For our students, Sno-Isle is more than just a school. It is a vital stepping stone toward their dreams and goals. Almost all past students are profoundly aware of this, as are most current students.
For the staff and administration, Sno-Isle is more than just a job. It is a vital mission to help our students reach their dreams and goals.
The building housed all of the school administrative offices and Le Bistro, a restaurant run by the Culinary Arts class.
The building also housed several other technical classes including: Nursing Assistant Medical Assisting Dental Assisting Computers, Servers, & Networking Computer/Web Programming Robotics, Electronics, & Computers (Part time in the building, part time in an off-campus lab) Criminal Justice (Part time in the building, part time in a lab in another on-campus building)
School was closed Wednesday and Thursday while administration and staff prepared to re-open on Friday. All of the above classes now have a new temporary home. Some have been invited into the classroom/shop space of classes in other buildings, and others were invited to move into a school district maintenance and transportation building next door to Sno-Isle. The office has relocated to a partitioned section of a large classroom in another building while an office trailer is being prepared.
The school did reopen on Friday, but without phone or computer network service. (All services were restored within a couple weeks.)
A number of our suppliers began immediately shipping needed equipment and supplies with the expectation that we will prepare the necessary purchase orders and send payment as soon as our business office is working again. To those businesses, THANK YOU for supporting us and our students in this time.
There has been an overwhelming outpouring of support for us from all over the county, state, and nation. Lots of people have written letters of support to the local paper, to radio and TV station blogs, and in many other places. Many of the letters have been from former students who tell how their lives have been enriched by the school. Some letters are from grateful parents. Other letters are from employers who praise the school for the quality of employees they have from among our graduates. There are lots of silver and gold linings surrounding this tragic event, and it will only make us better and stronger.
It may be in another year or two, but I will upload a video of our new building when it is completed and occupied.
[ Added 09/14/2009 - Our administrative offices are now housed in two trailers sitting at the edge of our parking lot. All of the displaced classes are now housed in one building at a local airport across the street from our main campus. Much of the main campus has become a construction zone, but classes have resumed as normal in buildings not damaged by the fire. The administration, staff, and students are all working well together. Education is still "happening" at Sno-Isle.]
Sno-Isle will continue to provide some of the finest high school technical education available anywhere. The region and the nation will continue to be enriched by our graduates.

Nice footage, I was in your video for a few moments at about 4:50. I was heading home from a class on fire behavior. This was a little better demonstration that what we had in class! Sorry for all who lost something to this fire.

Well... I had already lost most of my memories, as my classroom was the first to get torn down in the construction (I'm in Robotics for my second year), but that fire took away the rest. I'm very upset about the whole thing, but I'm glad that no staff or students were hurt.
