i meant as in it it small for the pitches it produces, for example, the cello, which produces a very low sound, has a large body to help carry out the sound whereas the viola has a reasonably small body and middlish range so in order to create a larger sound one has to work harder.

@njl89 the viola is often miked because it does project as much sound as, eg, the violin. This is because of its small body and low range.
Although, most soloists do have mikes anyway :L
