Sammy Miller doing one of his epic runs in the "Vanishing Point" rocket car during the 1980's at Santa Pod in England. This is at the World Finals event of 1984. The time & speed for this run are unknown but at an earlier event the same year he ran an elapsed time of 3.58 secs @ 386 mph which remains the fastest 1/4 mile time ever achieved at a dragstrip anywhere in the world. This clip is from a compilation of historic drag racing material available at www.timetraveldvds.co.uk.

  • Saw Sammy Miller several times and was lucky enough to see him do the 3.58 secs run.

  • It is incredible to think the record still stands!!

I saw him run shortly before he died at Santa pod, can't remember what show it was though! He crashed at the end of the strip doing something like 200 + mph... But they 'gaffer taped' the car up and he run it again the following day!! Now that takes guts!!

  • @camperman999 I was there too when he did the 3.58 secs @ 386 mph run. Incredible to watch. And little did I realise at the time that over 27 years later the record would still be standing.

  • @Ron5651 can some one tell me when Sammy made his last appearence at santa pod in his rocket car and is it still operational either here or the usa, thanks

  • @camperman999 Yes i was at this santa pod event the rocket car powered by hydrogen peroxide fuel really strange so see something so fast yet relativly quiet tho we can see some great dragstars still its doubtful that with the current health and safety laws anything like that would ever be allowed again to take place in the uk it certainly was very special times and a unique occaision to see thanks Sammy

  • I was at the one earlier in the year with my dad! I was 14! What a car! Fantastic to watch!

  • Yes i also met Sammy at santa pod around the same time he was a gentleman an entertainer and a true legend in the world of drag racing R.I.P Sammy

  • god... amazing how fast this car is...

  • I was one happy kid when i first met sammy, don't know the year? But somewhere around 85-86 at Mantorp park,he's death was a suprise when i heard it! R.I.P Sammy
