On our way back from Mexico, we had a little excitement when our cruise ship passed by a small boat full of 18 Cuban refugees. They were in distress and Royal Caribbean turned the 'Navigator of the Seas' around to rescue them. The US Coast Guard was notified and took over the rescue operation but before they arrived, our cruise ship spent 20 minutes watching over the Cubans.
The ship that rescued the refugees was the USCGC Ocracoke (WPB-1307), an Island Class Cutter of the United States Coast Guard. It departed from Key West at a speed around 28 knots and arrived at the scene in about 20 minutes.
