The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) took delivery of its first batch of six Gripen fighters in February 2011, which are based at Wing 7 in Surat Thani. Pilots and ground crew have been trained in Sweden and the RTAF declared the Gripen system operational in July the same year.

The new Thai Gripen fighters will be supported by Saab's Erieye Airborne Early Warning system (AEW) and a dedicated Command and Control System (C2), also provided by Saab.

In all, the Royal Thai Air Force has ordered 12 Gripen C/Ds, two Saab 340 Erieye AEW Aircraft and one Saab 340B for training and transport duties.

The first Saab 340 Erieye AEW and Saab 340 were delivered in 2010 while the first batch of six Gripen was handed over in early 2011. The second batch of Gripen fighters and a Saab 340 Erieye AEW Aircraft will be delivered during 2013.
