Such blatant innuendo at the expense of the, 'gay', populace wouldn't be allowed nowadays. Not in these politically correct times we now live in. Back then, people weren't offended by such tomfoolery. It was purely seen as comical to play on the idea of how some gay men are. Nothing malicious or anything to be offended by. How times change. And, not for the better.

There is no way this was intended to be offensive and no way it was seen as offensive. It's harmless joking playing on a stereotype. Sketches like this and the likes of Carry On and Are you being served? have made our society more liberal. Look at America where this kind of humor has always been dubbed politically incorrect and sensitive. This character is laughed 'with' as much as 'at'. I like Dick! I mean Mr. Emery of course.

I'm 50,(groan),& I well remember watching this as a kid & 'getting it',all the 'double entendres' & 'innuendos'.Oh,& watching my dad, blustering behind his newspaper & muttering about 'bloody pooftahs' but still managing to have a chuckle over it all. Thing about the great Dick Emery was that he never seemed to be doing it to cause offense.Well, why would he?! He & the likes of John Inman & Larry Grayson 'cocked a snoop' at the establishment.Gawd bless 'em all,is what I say!

Hahahahahahaha,I'm with you on that one, lol! Ooh er,matron!

Well I'm Gay and not offended by it at all. I think it's hilarious!

I was weaned on this stuff, used to watch it with my sister and dad and we would all kill ourselves laughing. Of course this kind of comedy looks slightly outdated and some would take offence now in this obsessively PC climate, but I adored Dick Emery - a man ahead of his time. Great Post.

You forget how funny he was.

What i love about these clips is that apart from the obvious camp comedy being hilarious is that it's all done with genuine warmth and affection for the character and not a hint of brashness or coarseness - how could anyone not like Clarence!
Crime 1234 Management is a twat.
