Nearly half of Nicaragua's population live below the poverty line. It means that working has become part of everyday life for hundreds of thousands of children, as their families struggle to make ends meet.

A group of children smash stones into small pieces, risking blindness as chips of rock fly into the air. Officially, child labour is illegal in Nicaragua and the cooperative leader in one quarry is quick to deny that any children are working there. "It is prohibited for children to work as stone cutters. It's much too risky. Children should go to school, not work." But Anibal, a ten-year-old labourer, tells a different story. He has already spent a year in hospital after he was injured working at the quarry. "A pile of dirt fell from up high. It fell on me and injured my leg." Despite the objections of the Sandinista government, being one of the poorest countries in Latin America leaves families with little choice. Diana Espinoza, the local representative from Save the Children admits it is a very difficult situation: "there's a whole market with child labour at several levels".

Most of you have missed the point. This Story is about showing the world what is happening there. Its not about right or wrong. People need to know or nothing gets fixed. Pull your heads out of your ass for one moment and don't hate on someone for trying to make a difference in the world. What have you done?

Oh I see...blame whitey for everything..

You should take a trip to Singapore....only independent from 'evil' whitey for only 60 years......has zero natural resources...it even imports bulk water.

You should blame left wing policies for the sad state of most of Lat Am...

The Nicaraguan people has bee exploited in their poverty since the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Spanish Conquistadors to "The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes". Ever since Pedrarias Davila, Gil Gonzalez Davila and Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba (the Official Spanish Conquistadors and Founders of Nicaragua), the Nicoya people have been resisting this relentless opression for more than 500 years and counting...

    Sincerely,

    Mauricio Davila Wills.

So let me get this straight- parents dont have money to support their children but they still choose to fuck like rabbits and reproduce???????? Why in a country where Im from people realised that and therefore chose only 1 or maybe 2 children policy in a family so there is some chance for them???? 8 children in a family!!! Logicaly parents have sentenced their children for work on a street. And stop blaming the government, its corrapted everywhere, but everything starts at home, between 2 people

are you aware about the countless interventions/invasions by the U.S. in Nicaragua? I think someone in the Carter administration said that they would turn Nicaragua into the Albania of Latin America. And feeding their starving and uneducated children is what they tried to achieve during the eighties and Reagan kicked their arses to their current paleolithic state. my .02 cents.
