The cinematography in that street scene... amazing!
-
in this scene we can see that Michael has freed himself from what Freud called the Oedipus complex
-
Thats what I call emotional.

@sugercoatedvenom You're closer than you think. One of cinematographer Conrad Hall's ideas was to replicate the feel of paintings by Edward Hopper. Check out Hopper's work; the link is very clear. Two great masters of imagery.

@PandarenSpartan well put.

@elenore88 PS. And he's carefully presented as a 'good' mobster. But at the end of the day he's just a hitman for a crook.
And yet his character is one of a man who could walk straight out of this and into a meg ryan romance.

@PandarenSpartan give me a break. it's a total set up. tom hanks plays the same sort of personality type that he portrays in other movies - like 'You've Got Mail'. He's the same guy. But in this he's a cold blooded mobster who murders people to 'put food on the table'.
At least the other characters (like jude law) are realisticly twisted and unethical.
'Sips of tea' or 'sips of denial'. If the audience didn't like his character the movie wouldn't succeed.

If I had to kill someone I thought of as a father - I would have shut my eyes because it's just sad you know?

@kocean1 You know Newman didn't die til 2008. And this movie was made in 2002. Just wanted to let you know.

Paul Newman getting communion scene is epic even though he's a hit man he follows his faith and accepts values, morals, and ethics. Except for killing people.

I thought Frank Darabont directed this but it was actually directed by Sam Mendes. He did it justice.
