You are exactly right. The grain and figure of the Maple Cap along with the saw cut and book-match determine the "look" of the guitar. Mine is a 'Flamed" top. Other types are: Tiger Stripe, Curly, Fiddleback, Pin Stripe, Ribbon Curl, Blister, and BirdsEye.
The Beauty of The Burst by Yashuiko Iwanade details the LP look along with other pertinent Les Paul info.
its not called "gibson striping" its the flamed maple top....ITS THE WOOD NOT THE PAINT

When I want to make it wail, I use a Blackface Pre-CBS '65 Fender Bassman. The same circuit that Jim Marshall based his amps on.
