This short clip is from the DVD which includes behind the scenes in Charlie Chaplin's film 'The Circus'. Attending the premiere at Manns Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA - the scene shows a large woman (or man), dressed in black and a hat, talking into something that only be described as a mobile phone device or possibly a walkie-talkie. Remember this is from 1928.

While that's possibly true...And the most probable answer...Her mouth is moving, 'talking', and nobody is around her (That we can see) that is talking to her or giving her reason to be listening to someone through a hearing aide...Maybe she literally just bought it and is enjoying hearing her own voice?...Sure is interesting though! I wonder does she have Angry Birds on it? :P

After 5 minutes of google you get the answer. A 1924 hearing amplifier or hearing aid.

    どう見てもケータイで話しているように見える。

    万が一この1928年にタイムトリップしたとしても、ケータイ電波が存在しないから通話できんだろう。

It appears to be talking on the mobile phone no matter how you look at it.

Even if this time trip to 1928 by any chance, you will not be calling mobile phone radio waves are not present.

i think there may be the possiblility that instead of a cell phone which would need a tower and satelite, that he may have been a traveler from another planet and that he is speaking into a communicator (think star trek) not future but current in that day and time in the universe. the poor disguise ( obviously a man in womans dress)

the other item that puzzles me is that there is a color shift on the zebra only when he approaches. at first i thought it was film degradation. but now i'm not sure
