Now public domain government film OPERATION ARGUS; the firing of nuclear devices in the far atmosphere with the goal of injecting a few bazillion electrons (and many, many Curies of isotopic garbage) into the Van Allen radiation belts enveloping the earth; the near-relativistic speed electrons would create huge EM disturbances, shielding "an attack" either by them damn commies or, umm, us. Unbelievable... it's not hard to read between the lines are realize they they are experimenting on the launch vehicle as they go... what a bunch of out of control cowboys. Never mind the hot metal vapor that rained down somewhere.
