This terrifying tale is based on a short story by legendary author Ryunosuke Akutagawa. It was adapted for the screen by four punk college kids with about $30 - if that doesn't do the story justice, I don't know what would. The movie concerns one Yoshihide, a painter for the local shogunate who's commissioned to paint hell on a screen. The process completely absorbs Yoshihide - sending him into a spiral of craziness, chaos, and TOTAL CARNAGE!! Definitely NOT for the faint of heart. Features an entire soundtrack plucked from Dario Argento's horror masterpiece, "Suspiria".
Interesting adaptation of "Hell Screen." I've also seen the 1969 movie and it was awesome; it is among my collection favorites. Oh yes, I love the invisible owl. They used a bunch of those in "Gormenghast," too, but then they added CGI. ;=)

Pretty cool. The acting kind of bugged me, but other than that it wasn't too bad. Reminded me of 'Pickman's Model', by H.P. Lovecraft.
