A quick video capture of how I shaded the back of a character's hair for this picture: http://laitma.deviantart.com/art/c-l-o-s-e-r-144611294 The actual painting time was around 18 minutes, sped up here to about 4 minutes. The background music is Into the Blue by The Album Leaf, and video capture is by Camtasia Studio.
This image was drawn with PaintTool SAI, basic tools only, so I hope that it will be useful to all of you~
(And hopefully you'll be smarter than me and add shadows before you add highlights, hahaha xD )
Enjoy!

  • @saiyannprince Ahahaha, oh no, how so?? I'm glad that this helped make your life easier?? <:D

    Thank you so much! <3

  • Why do you have all these tools?:)

  • @Trachilify Do you mean, tools in PaintTool SAI? Or do you mean the drawing program in general? I actually use very few drawing programs; pretty much just PaintTool SAI and a bit of editing in photoshop on some occasions. x)

  • thats so awesome :)

but it looks so hard even with a tablet

  • @KrazyKasumi : Ahahaha, no, it's really not that bad, honest! It just looks like a lot of work since the brush is small, but it's really quite simple. :) Good luck!

  • @laitma Okay I'll try when I get a new tablet pen :)

  • aahhh, this helps so much! I've been wondering how color the hair realistic :)

    thank you!

  • @laitma yeah,..thx..^^

  • @BRJsweetserenity: Yes, a tablet does simplify a lot of the work, but I don't think that you should use a medium/tool to judge artwork. You can do amazing things with a mouse; I drew digitally with a mouse for three years before finally deciding to invest in a tablet. You just need to have the patience to really work at your lines and shading.

And, just for the record, tablets can be quite affordable! Look up wacom refurbished tablets (~$40), they're a great deal!

    Good luck!
