  • How any of you could comment on anything but Sophia Loren in this clip is beyond me. God, she was gorgeous.

  • @shadowheart52 Take a look at my Lucilla clip then, in my page. I tried to place the link here, but this bloody youtube won't allow.

  • Is there any evidence that Marcus Aurelius really tried to prevent Commodus from being his successor, or is that just Hollywood?

  • Unfortunately it's only wishful thinking; Marcus made sure his stupid and cruel son would succeed him, thus helping to destroy the Roman Empire and doing a great disservice to mankind.

  • Even the wisest of men can be a fool when it comes to his children.

  • Thanks for posting this, I'm a Marcus Aurelius fan . He made the study of Philosophy obligatory; every city had to have 4 Philosophy schools: Platonic, Aristotelic, Epicurean, Stoic (he was a Stoic, of course) paid for by the State. He also persecuted Christians, and apparently was an opium-addict, also because he suffered from cancer. A great man, I wish we had politicians like him today. His Meditations should be read by everybody. And Alec Guiness is fantastic, the perfect actor to play him

  • That plato's philosopher king.

  • "you shell never fined a more reched hive of scume and villany"

  • @wusundowma

He wanted his older son who he had mentored to succeed him but he had died of disease, He could have adopted someone else but he feared that Commodus who was already co-emperor would start a civil war for the throne, I suspect that his poor health and opium addiction impaired his judgment and the fact that he had loved his son despite his short comings that he decided to take a gamble and put faith in Commodus.
