Seven girls who were on Monday rescued after they had undergone female genital mutilation in Meru are set to be discharged from hospital. The incident had left one of the girls unconscious, and another who was 3 months pregnant fighting to save her unborn baby. Although FGM has been outlawed in Kenya since the ratification of the children's act in 2001, it is alive and kicking especially in the region. But as Sally Mbilu reports, parliament is set to debate a proposed bill criminalising the act.

  • One of the girls was pregnant. This tells me that she should have been circumcised a lot earlier, as the cutting would have prevented the impurity to which the girl has clearly stooped. And as for the custom causing ill health, this happens only if it is performed poorly, so it is an argument in support of the procedure being fully legal and performed by trained operatives in sterile conditions, surely?

  • how primitive?! as a chic I have no words!

  • Ni poa sana kwa wasichana.

  • This is extremely sad!! I can't believe it is still happening in this day and age :(((. Kenya kweli tuna shida mingi...

  • ooh God:::::::(((((
