Each Dec. since the early 1990s, NACo staff holds a "Holiday Auction" to raise money for a D.C.-area charity. This year, NACo staffers raised $10,000(!!!) for the Academy of Hope bidding on donated items ranging from homemade peanut butter cup cookies to an autographed Jerry Rice football; from a bag of picture frames to 2 tickets to a Washington Nationals baseball game. In this clip, longtime NACo Auctioneer Tony Giancola (retired Executive Director of the National Assn. of County Engineers) auctions off a blue hippo piggy bank. The Academy of Hope is a nonprofit that helps the 20 percent of D.C. adults without a high school diploma obtain one through GED and external diploma programs to help break the cycle of intergenerational poverty in Washington.
