By the director's own admission, they altered the story to make for a more entertaining film. Plus, I personally believe Edmond should've had the honor of killing Mondego and not letting the coward die by his own hand. Though, had I written the book, bodies would be dropping like the rain on cool April day.

Most film adaptations do that. But be happy that it was only lines that were cut. The most recent adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo had most of its story rewritten to the point where the only similarities shared between the book and the film were the title and the names of the characters.
