Groundbreaking for the New 9th District Police Station

The present 9th District Station, at the corner of 35th and Lowe, was built in 1936, and is much too small for the today's District police force.

The building of its replacement has been delayed again and again.

But on the morning of May 31, 2007, ground was finally broken for the new station a half-mile northwest at 31st and Halsted.

Cook County Commissioners John Daley and Tony Peraica and Aldermen James Balcer (11th, in whose ward both old and new stations are located) and Joann Thompson (16th) and 9th District Commander Eugene Roy are among the dignitaries wielding the gold-plated shovels.

The whole project should be completed by the end of next year.

"Alderman". In other cities, they're called city councilmen. They're elected from 50 different sections of the city called wards. Out of our 50 aldermen, 13 are minority women. Now that's progress.

They may not be as intellegent as your self sir, but they can function just the same in government just as a person of the caucasian persuasion. We have many of them here in australia. Glad to hear that race relations in Australia has advanced so far. As far as minorities in politics here, it's been a long, hard fight against white power-brokers who were very reluctant to acknowledge that the demographics of Chicago were changing.

One day I'm sure the white folks will understand the new demographics with time. They will just have to realize that the Indian's were there first and elect more of them to power. Even if they are the minorities now.
