The two soldiers of fortune were obtained with approximately 35 miles to go, then Danish Christopher Juul Jensen was part of a six-man outbreak with two laps to go and had a lead of 34 seconds, while the field behind was characterized by small eruptions.
The six riders became eight, but with 14 km left, there were assembling troops, and although a Columbian, an Italian, a Dutchman and an Austrian in turn tried to wrest themself free of the inflated pace ahead of the game, the decision was postponed to the last climb.
